CrossFit Games Open 2011

So what are the CrossFit Games and the CrossFit Open?

Watch this video first –

Then have a good look around the CrossFit Games website

Essentially the Open is a six week competition and the first step in qualifying for the CrossFit Games.

If you want to compete you MUST register as an athlete on the CrossFit Games website. This costs $5. Registering puts you in the running for the CrossFit Games and will allow you to compare your results with thousands of other athletes across the world. Once you’ve done this join our affiliate team – it’s free to join!

We are a small affiliate and most of us will need to scale the workouts but that’s no excuse not to register and take part. This is going to be a 6 week party, CrossFitters all over the world doing the same workouts regardless of experience. So whether you’re planning to crush the wods and get to the Regionals or just have some fun please register online and then join Team Tameside.

What are we doing at CrossFit Tameside?

We are a registered affiliate for the Open and plan to opt-in to each week’s workout as long as we have the necessary equipment. This means that we will be able to validate the workouts of registered athletes. If for some reason we are unable to opt-in we will do everything we can to help our members complete the workout – this will probably involve visiting another local affiliate.

There will probably be a couple of opportunities each week to do the CrossFit Games qualifying workout. Keep an eye on this website and our Facebook page for details.

It will be free for our members and for members of other local affiliates to have their workout validated, there will be a £5 charge for anybody else. CrossFit Tameside members will be able to turn up to our designated sessions and complete the workout. All other affiliate members and non-members must contact us in advance so we can make sure we have enough time to fit you in. Please do this as soon as you can after we announce the timings so you’re not disappointed. If you have any questions about this please get in touch.

We also think it would be great to end the 6 week Open with a bang – any ideas for a way to celebrate all the hard work we’ll have put in? BBQ? Meal out? Let us know.

Some wise words about why you should join in

Next week marks the start of the CrossFit Games Open season… six WODs over six weeks… a world-wide fitness competition, searching for the fittest man and woman on earth. I know for most of us, the CrossFit Games are completely out of reach… you’re not going, and neither am I. So why are these competitions so important for us?

Why is the school play important for a 4th grader? And what about the piano recital? How about that audition for choir, or the try outs for cheerleading? What about taking a test, or the SATs? And what about the millions of kids playing sports growing up… who have competitions every week, month and year… most of whom don’t win, and will never go to the Olympics? Do you remember what it was like growing up… when you had to put it all on the line… risk failing, being embarrassed, getting it wrong, making a mistake?

Without the chance of failure, there can be no success. Without risk, reward is non-existant. And without an event toward which you can focus your training and efforts, purpose is lacking. You see, the outcome of the CrossFit Games competitions or of a CFLA Challenge makes no difference… the purpose of these events for most of us is to give us a practice field… a place, date and time for us to put ourselves at risk. That is a skill, like a handstand, that only comes with hours of practice, and requires commitment and dedication to show up, in spite of the discomfort.

So join me… next week… I’ll be there. Will you?
