How are you different from a regular gym?
Apart from all the missing machines?
CrossFit Tameside is a coaching facility rather than a gym. You will receive personalised instruction for every exercise and workout. Everyone completes the same workout together scaled appropriately for their individual needs. This builds camaraderie and community – it’s a whole lot more fun than working out on your own.
You can get a feel for the different workouts we offer on our Workout of the Day page but please bear in mind that this would be altered to suit you.
Where are all your machines?
In the same place as all the mirrors. Apart from rowing machines we don’t use any. Machines often force your body to move in unnatural ways and can put unacceptable stresses on your joints. We primarily utilise functional movements which move their joints through their natural range and have a better carryover into life and sport.
Do I need to be fit to start CrossFit?
No! And in case you didn’t get that the first time… No!
CrossFit Tameside is a friendly and fun place for everyone to workout whatever their current fitness level. If you want to get fitter all you have to do is show up. We can scale every workout to your abilities and you will be pushed and encouraged based on your current level of fitness. All we want is for you to give your best effort during each workout.
Is CrossFit really hard?
Hard, but not impossible. If it was too easy you’d get bored and you wouldn’t see results. We will make sure that you learn how to complete all the movements safely and with great form. Loads and intensity are scaled to your own ability so a workout will challenge you whatever your current fitness level.
And we’re sorry but it doesn’t get easier – as you get fitter the load and intensity increases. The constant challenge combined with the varied workouts ensures your motivation remains and your fitness improves.
How often do you change your routine?
Every day!
No seriously. Every day will be a different workout and you won’t know what it’s going to be until you turn up. We combine elements from gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting, power lifting and many other disciplines to create constantly varied, challenging and fun workouts. There’ll always be something new to learn and you’ll work your weaknesses as well as your strengths.
There are certain benchmark workouts that we do return to now and again so you can measure your improvement.
Will lifting heavy weights make me big and bulky?
No it will make you strong.
This is normally only a worry for ladies and don’t worry girls your bodies aren’t designed to react that way to heavy weights. Put out of your head any pictures of female body builders – these ladies tend to look masculine because they train and ‘supplement’ in a way designed to increase muscle size. We don’t do either of these.
“Staying weak because of how it might make you look is the same as staying illiterate for fear of appearing nerdy. Stop it. You’re better than that.” - Geoff Girvitz of Bang Fitness
How much do you cost?
Nothing at all for your first week!
We won’t tie you into a yearly contract – you can cancel at any time if you’re not happy with the results you’re getting. We offer a variety of flexible membership options that we will be happy to discuss with you during your free trial week.
This sounds great. How do I get started?
If you’re new to exercise or a lot of the CrossFit movements we recommend you begin with our Foundations Course. If you consider yourself fit or have been CrossFitting on your own you may be able to integrate straight into our group classes. Please get in touch with us, or drop in to watch a class to find out which option is right for you.
What should I wear?
Something comfortable with layers that you can remove as you warm up. We take you through a full range of movement so your clothes need to move with you. On your feet wear something you can jog/run in. We generally advise against overly-cushioned trainers but don’t go buying anything new. Your old trainers will be fine.
Do you have showers?
We have 2 changing rooms each with a shower.
Hey, you didn't answer my question...
I’m not surprised. There’s so much to find about CrossFit that we can’t really cover it all here.
Luckily the folks at CrossFit HQ have put together a really comprehensive FAQ page. Alternatively please feel free to email us and we’ll do our best to help.
